Solutions for Military Door Actuation

The emergence of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) has engineers and designers working to mitigate the hazards soldiers face in the event of such an attack. This has led to innovative v-hull designs constructed with thicker, heavier armor for military vehicles such as tanks, MRAPs, and other platforms. As a result many military vehicles require roll over protected hydraulic actuation for opening and closing doors and ramps. Concurrently, manufacturers must work to maximize fuel efficiency through weight reduction, often at the expense of auxiliary systems. A major challenge has been where to find a hydraulic door actuation solution with the ability to function in the event of a rollover. Morrell is a valuable contributor to these efforts with solutions comprised of hydraulic power units, self-contained pressurized reservoirs, cartridge valve manifolds, and actuators. We’re involved in integrating military door actuation systems within existing vehicle designs or working with OEMs on new platforms. Morrell’s contribution to modern military vehicles offers occupants the ability to open ramps and doors in normal conditions as well as to evacuate in the aftermath of an attack, right side up, sideways, or upside down.

Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality Support

As traditional conflicts between nations devolve into sporadic assaults by non-state actors, the areas of operation military vehicles must function are posing unique challenges in the efforts to keep troops safe. This reality infuses a tremendous degree of unpredictability for engineers and manufacturers when planning how to best mitigate hazards posed by the evolving nature of warfare. Morrell’s engineering and manufacturing support assists in the design and development of hydraulic door and ramp actuation throughout the product lifecycle. Compact, modular designs allow for reduced maintenance and quick changeover. Virtual prototyping capabilities help to enable analysis of the extreme events likely to be encountered in-theatre, helping to make improvements prior to production of new vehicles and integration within existing platforms. We work with our customers to develop documentation, maintenance manuals, spare parts, and service schedules. Morrell’s experience providing a portfolio of design and build capabilities allows us to provide kits to streamline production and retrofits, at the factory and in the field.

In situations where military vehicles are immobilized, the best chance for survival for soldiers is often escape. The violence of an IED incident can turn these tremendously heavy vehicles over, thereby blocking exit, potentially disabling the powertrain and crucial auxiliary systems. This means armored doors may be impossible to open after such an event due to the extreme weight and final position of the vehicle. Military ramp and door actuation systems must be designed and configured to function in the event of such emergencies. Morrell provides military door actuation systems that enable soldiers to exit the vehicle, regardless of its orientation. When major systems fail our systems continue to function through the redundancy of our back up systems. On the battlefield, safety means being prepared for the worst. Military door actuation solutions from Morrell are designed and built to function in the most routine and challenging situations imaginable.

Hydraulic Power Units

For over forty years Morrell has designed and built hydraulic power units for use within virtually every industry. As a result, our inventory of mobile hydraulic systems and components is as extensive as our depth of design, engineering, and build experience. Morrell’s custom hydraulic power units for military vehicles provide flexibility to engineers and designers, revealing options that reduce weight and save space while increasing performance. Mobile hydraulic power units from Morrell range from 12vdc – 700vdc to accommodate various pump sizes and types. Bi-directional motor technologies work to further reduce weight by consolidating door and ramp actuation within a more compact solution. With the ability to withstand the rigors of routine opening and closing and designed to function in the event of a disabling event, mobile hydraulic power units from Morrell are built to our military customers’ exact specification for extended periods of reliable performance.

Self-Contained Pressurized Reservoirs

A key facet of military vehicle rollover protection is the utilization of military door and ramp actuation systems with the ability to function in the aftermath of an attack. Self-contained pressurized reservoirs are what enable actuation in the event a military vehicle has flipped over, thereby increasing the chance of survival by allowing occupants to evacuate in extreme conditions. Morrell works with military vehicle manufacturers to design and develop door and ramp actuation solutions to perform in such catastrophic events. This is accomplished through the incorporation of self-contained pressurized reservoirs that function regardless of the orientation of the vehicle after attack. Our compact, modular designs save space, reduce weight, and allow for easy maintenance and changeover. The self-contained pressurized reservoirs Morrell uses in military door and ramp actuation solutions feature a charged inlet to the pump. Our vast experience in designing hydraulic systems for the mobile equipment industry means we serve as an indispensible partner in the design and build of military door and ramp actuation systems.

Cartridge Valve Manifolds

Morrell’s military door and ramp actuation solutions are enhanced by the introduction of cartridge valve manifolds that allow for proportional control of doors and ramps by vehicle occupants and safety load holding valves that enable smooth, precise, and trouble-free operation. With decades of multidisciplinary experience within virtually every industrial environment, Morrell’s ability to provide custom manifold assemblies for hydraulic systems has been a major component of our business for over forty years. This has enabled us to serve as a crucial manufacturing partner to customers in the mobile equipment industry. We leverage our extensive hydraulic engineering experience with custom manifold build capabilities, providing actuation systems with a vastly reduced footprint. We help manufacturers and the military realize significant weight reduction through the use of compact and lightweight components. Our customers are involved in retrofitting existing military vehicle platforms to meet the challenges confronting soldiers today and designing the war vehicles of tomorrow.

Door & Ramp Actuators

Among all of the space saving components found within Morrell’s military door and ramp actuation systems, nothing packs as much power in such a condensed package as the rotary and cylinder actuators themselves. In order to serve as a single-source solution for military door and ramp actuation, these systems are able to accommodate hinges integrated within the ramp or for externally mounted hinges requiring horizontal or vertical mounting configurations. Customers’ design and engineering teams benefit from our involvement early in the process to discern component sizing and selection relative to gearbox, chain drive, mounting options, torque and load requirements. Properly pairing these components with the overall design and engineering direction as development progresses has proven to save our customers time and money. Morrell’s service and support from the initial phases of concept, design, build to through distribution maintenance are important to getting the most out of crucial mechanical components.

Morrell leverages over four decades of design, engineering, and build experience with our vast inventory of hydraulic systems and components. From 3D scanning of whole vehicles and individual components to ergonomic studies and virtual prototyping, Morrell is an invaluable asset in our customers’ efforts to maximize fuel efficiency through weight reduction and optimizing space. We work with our customers to develop military door and ramp actuation systems that offer superior performance in safe and hostile situations. Compact, modular designs promote the ease of manufacture, installation, and maintenance. Military door and ramp actuation systems from Morrell are comprised of hydraulic power units, self-contained pressurized reservoirs, cartridge valve manifolds, and actuators. We contribute to the design and development of the innovative war vehicles of the future by providing military door actuation systems proven to function in the event of a vehicle rollover. Our ability to work seamlessly with our customers’ design and engineering personnel equates to significant cost savings and unrivalled quality throughout the entire product lifecycle.
